A South Australian road has been covered in thousands of potatoes after a truck carrying the vegetables rolled in the dark.

Emu Flat Road in Keith, south-east of Adelaide, was closed this morning as crews worked to clean up the mess after the crash about 10pm on Thursday.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area, taking the opportunity to throw in some potato-themed puns.
