An investigation has been launched after police shot a man they said threatened officers with a knife at a police station in western Sydney.
NSW Police said the man was shot after making the threats at Auburn police station shortly after midnight on Tuesday.

Police performed first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to Westmead Hospital but he died shortly after arrival, police said.

He was yet to be formally identified but police claimed he was involved in the stabbing of a 28-year-old stranger minutes earlier at Auburn railway station.

That man, who is younger than the man who was shot, was taken to Westmead Hospital in a stable condition.

Police said a critical incident team including homicide squad officers would investigate the incident, in an investigation subject to independent review.
