Officers cordoned the area off and placed tyre deflation devices to try to stop the car fleeing.

A 27-year-old senior constable was setting up one such device on the Springvale Road exit when a male returned to the stolen car.

He drove out of the carpark, striking the senior constable.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he remains.

The car was found abandoned a short time later on Tucker Road in Vermont.

Police blocked Springvale Road to traffic between Burwood Highway and Mullens Road while they investigate the incident.
