Police are appealing for help as they try to identify a young boy found wandering around north-west Sydney wearing only his underpants.

The child is believed to be aged between three and four but is unable to communicate with officers.

The boy was located on Carlingford Road in Carlingford, near Darwin Street, about 6pm today.

Officers from The Hills Police Area Command attended and attempted to door-knock on streets in the local area but were unable to identify the child.

The boy is described as being of East Asian appearance with short straight black hair.

Police are hoping the parents or guardians of the child or anyone able to identify the boy will come forward.
