Albanese is set to invoke the 1967 referendum when he speaks in Adelaide this evening, urging Australians to take another step towards reconciliation.

The 1967 referendum saw 90 per cent of voters agree to change the Constitution to allow Indigenous people to be counted as part of the national population.

It is one of eight successful referendums – out of 44 that have passed Parliament – since Federation.

Albanese will also warn of scare campaigns and push back against claims that the Voice would racially divide Australia.

The Voice was a first-term commitment Albanese took to the 2022 federal election as opposition leader, and it’s expected to take another big step forward this week.

The House of Representatives is expected to pass the bill for the referendum, which will send it to the Senate by the end of June.

A date for the referendum itself is yet to be set.

It’s expected to take place between October and December.

The wording of the referendum question, and the principles along which the Voice itself would be constructed, were revealed earlier this year.
