A cargo plane from Melbourne made an emergency landing in Sydney Airport about 3.30am on Tuesday

A plane was forced to make an emergency landing at Sydney Airport in the early hours of Tuesday morning after issuing a mayday call.

The cargo plane took off from Melbourne and landed in Sydney at 3.30am.

A mechanical issue was blamed for the incident.

Because the aircraft was not carrying passengers, it did not breach Sydney’s overnight curfew, between 11pm and 6am.

It was also why pilots were instructed by Air Services Australia to declare a mayday.

‘We have to land as soon as possible, mayday, mayday, mayday,’ audio from the plane said.

Sydney Airport said the freighter service, operated by ASL Airlines Australia, landed without issue and then departed on its next sector.

ASL Airlines Australia has been contacted.
