Two pilots have walked away with minor injuries after a light plane crashed into a park beside a primary school in Sydney’s west just before school pick-up time.

The light plane went down in Terone Park in the suburb of Bossley Park in Sydney’s west just after 2.30pm.

The plane took off from Bankstown Airport at 2.15pm and then entered engine failure at 2.30pm, Fire and Rescue NSW confirmed.

It was in the air for just six minutes before the mayday call was made.

The pilots suffered minor injuries.

They were assessed by paramedics on the scene and did not need further treatment, FRNSW Duty Commander Chris Andrews said.

“The pilots were very shaken, but they’d be counting their blessings to be walking away with very minor injuries after a significant aircraft crash,” he said.

Hero local Sam Elias heard the crash and ran to help.

“I heard a big bang, I came out to see what happened and I saw an aeroplane…I ran over, saved the pilot, [and] moved the second guy,” witness Sam Elias.

“The first [man] we took out was good, but the second one hurt his nose, he had a little bit of blood.”

“It would [have been] be [a disaster] if any kids were there, thank god there was no one there.”

9News understands witnesses saw two people exiting the plane alive. (Nine)

Parents started picking their children up from a school opposite the park where the plane went down just 20 minutes later.

“They play sport there sometimes [on the basketball court] it’s very lucky there were no kids [there], there was no one around,” Sam’s wife, Lena said.

The aircraft was significantly damaged.

A fuel leak coming from the plane has been confined to the area surrounding the aircraft, FRNSW said.
