A pilot somehow managed to keep his cool after an enormous bird smashed through the windscreen into his cockpit in Ecuador leaving him covered in blood.

The video of squadron leader Ariel Valiente has gone viral after he recorded the terrifying incident in Vinces, Los Ríos Province.

Footage shows the remains of the bird dangling above the pilot who has bloodstains all over his face and uniform as he continues to steer the plane looking unfazed.

Luckily the rest of the exercise went to plan and the aircraft maintained its stability throughout. The species of bird involved is not yet known.

Aviation authorities have not yet been able to determine the altitude of the aircraft at the time of the incident, nor the route that it was following.

The large bird was said to have died minutes after impact.

In April, a passenger plane pilot had to carry out an emergency landing after a bird flew into one of the engines.

The incident took place during Avianca airline’s AV9377 flight from San Andrés Island to Bogotá in Colombia.

The video showed flames shooting out of one of the aircraft’s engines shortly after takeoff.

The aircraft was forced to return to the Gustavo Rojas Pinilla International Airport in San Andrés, situated in the Caribbean Sea off the coast of Nicaragua but part of Colombia.

The Airbus A 320-214 completed a successful emergency landing.
