Petrol prices soar before easter, dropping at a "snail's pace"

The NRMA says while petrol prices haven’t risen to the peak we saw in February (average $1.93/L), prices are still too high for most families.

Currently, Sydney has the most expensive petrol in Australia. 

“We were at the high point of the cycle in Sydney at the end of last week, and we are falling at a snail’s pace,” NRMA spokesperson Peter Khoury said.

“It’s really important that people pick the right place and the right time to fill up in the next few days.

“Wholesale prices have hovered between $1.69 and the mid $1.70s all year, they have barely moved, that’s quite uncommon.”

Sydney has the highest price on unleaded petrol in Australia, averaging $2 per litre with some petrol stations charging as much as $2.11/L.

Khoury says the increase in petrol prices is due to a jump in wholesale oil rates, now selling for $5 a barrel.

However, he says paying anything over $2/L for unleaded is “unjustifiably expensive.” 

“The gap between the cheapest and most expensive service station in Sydney right now is about 47c,” he said.

“For those that are too high…our advice for the public is to drive straight past them, there’s no need to be paying over $2 a litre.”

The NRMA also said diesel prices are too high and are matching the top cycle of unleaded prices, despite not having a price cycle.

“The NRMA remains extremely concerned about diesel prices across the country, they have been too high for too long,” Khoury said.

“Diesel wholesale prices have fallen consistently for months and yet we are still seeing delays in the falls of Diesel prices.”

Over 40 per cent of motorists drive diesel cars.

NRMA say they don’t expect petrol prices to drop until ANZAC day weekend. 

The advice for drivers until then is to research where you can find the cheapest petrol on the NRMA app.
