This practical $7 buy captured the attention of thousands who have been trying to protect their homewares from the curious claws of pet cats and dogs

It’s only been a couple of weeks, but desperate pet owners are already struggling to find Kmart’s new pet furniture protector on shelves.

The practical $7 buy captured the attention of thousands who have been trying to protect their homewares from the curious, razor-sharp claws of their pet cats and dogs.

As simple as it is cheap, the stick-on creation is designed to keep sofas, chairs and other furniture safe from scratches.

The pack includes one transparent protector, which is made from PVC, and one plastic scraper.

It measures 300cm x 30cm and sticks firmly to polyester, cotton, wood, glass and acrylic surfaces.

It is also ‘suitable’ for velvet and faux or real leather but sticking anything with an adhesive to an expensive surface is a huge risk and not one many would take.

A shopper asked for recommendations in a private Kmart decor community this week, after struggling to keep her cat – and her paws – off the expensive furniture.

‘Has anyone used this on a real leather couch? My cat has a habit of kneading her paws into the couch when she’s sitting on the cushions,’ she wrote alongside a snap of the new buy.

‘I don’t know if this would ruin the leather? Would love some reviews!’

And she soon found out that those who have tried it, adore it.

‘Oh I love mine, it has stopped my kitten from scratching my lounge,’ one responded.

‘I put it on the corners on the back and the sides of the three-seater and that’s it, she hasn’t scratched since. She attempted but once she realised she can’t she used her cat pole.’

Others suggested using a thick plastic table cloth from Spotlight which can be cut to size, or Al Foil as cats are deterred by the feel and noise.

Kmart also sells a $10 cat scratch couch protector which is made from polyester and comes in grey and cream.

A safer option for expensive couches, this option is draped over the side of the furniture and distracts cats with a sisal surface.

‘My cats have learned how to use it.. so also happy that it’s protecting my couch from damage,’ a happy shopper raved.

Other hot pet buys from Kmart of late include the $25 pet couch cover, the pet corduroy couch topper and the $15 IQ toy dispenser – all of which have received five-star reviews.

Pet buys are some of the most popular from the budget store, with the puppy pads regularly named a best-seller.

In addition, the 50c Bubble Mega Wand was officially named the number one product of the year in 2024, followed by the $2 Hot Wheels cars, the $49 21L microwave and the $59 3.75L air fryer.

Other top buys for 2024 included the old favourite $59 Foldable Beach Trolley and a $7.50 1.7L cordless kettle.
