Moe’s owner, Richard Buxton, had taken the dog to his local supermarket in Brighton to buy some groceries this morning.
“It’s a tragedy for my wife because she loves (Moe) like a son,” he said, earlier in the day.
“He is like a first member of the family.”
Two men were later arrested over the alleged theft of a black Mercedes station wagon and the cavoodle from the supermarket at about 7.30am.
Police said the men were driving a white BMW when they were involved in a crash on Dorothea Mackellar Ave in Oakleigh East about 11.45am.
A 20-year-old man from The Basin and a 25-year-old Ashwood man allegedly ran from the scene of the crash and were arrested by police nearby and charged with car theft and other offences.

Police allege the BMW is linked to the stolen station wagon.
Witnesses told 9News the men were trailing Buxton in a white BMW before one man got out and stole the vehicle after the electronic keys were left in the centre console.
“It was very well planned. It just happened in a minute and the car was gone,” Buxton said.
Police tonight confirmed the pet pooch was back with the family.
But they said the car, a 2017 Mercedes C250 station wagon with roof racks and registration VBG 946, was yet to be located.
Both men will both appear at Ringwood Magistrates’ Court tomorrow.
