An Australian man has returned home after being released from jail in the US over a fatal head-on crash.

Luke Nardini, 32, was embraced by his family when he touched down in Perth this afternoon, almost 18 months since taking off for his overseas adventure.

His trip took a turn when he crashed his BMW head-on into a Ford SUV in California, near San Francisco, in September 2023.

Husband and wife Jack and Linda Davis, who were in the back seat of the Ford, died.

“I’m scarred for life because of it, mentally, physically, emotionally,” Nardini said.

Nardini admitted to “misdemeanour vehicular manslaughter” and was sentenced to 60 days in prison.

“I wouldn’t wish it on anyone. It’s been a nightmare, being trapped in a foreign country, unable to do lots of things, limited rights, isolated,” he said.

“I’ve done what needs to be done, I’d like to carry on and go from there.”

Now free, Nardini remains on probation and is required to speak at local schools about driver safety.

He said he’s ready for a fresh start back home.

“[I’m] overwhelmed, relieved,” he said.

“It’s been a long journey. I’m glad to be back home and restart again.”
