Thousands of passengers have been evacuated from Perth Airport, sparking widespread chaos.

The airport has confirmed a ‘small’ kitchen fire inside a restaurant in terminal four sparked the emergency on Tuesday afternoon with the entire airport evacuated as per ‘safety procedures’.

The fire was extinguished by the time firefighters arrived.

The terminals have since been reopened to travellers.

‘Delays for some departing flights are expected,’ a spokeswoman added.

The incident has also caused delays for arriving flights with passengers stuck on planes grounded on the tarmac.

‘Perth airport has been evacuated because there was a fire/smoke and my mum and sister are stuck on the plane and been told they can’t get off,’ one woman said.

Photos show long queues of travellers waiting outside the terminal and the deserted.

‘We were going to be here for HOURS #sendwine,’ one man tweeted.
