Patrick Mahomes reacts to Travis Kelce putting off retirement for Chiefs return

Patrick Mahomes is pumped to have his tight end back.

Hours after news emerged that Travis Kelce would be returning to the Chiefs in 2025, Mahomes took to social media to celebrate, posting a popular meme of Michael Jordan’s security guard John Michael Wozniak shrugging in ESPN’s “The Last Dance.”

ESPN’s Pat McAfee revealed on his self-titled show on Thursday that Kelce would be coming back for his 13th NFL season.

“I’m coming back, for sure,” Kelce told McAfee in a text that was read on-air. “Gonna try and get to the best shape I’ve been this offseason and get back to the mountaintop. Got a real bad taste in my mouth with how I played in that last game and how I got the guys ready for battle. I can’t go out like that!!!!”

There’s been much speculation about the 10-time Pro Bowler’s playing future since the Chiefs fell to the Eagles in Super Bowl 2025 earlier this month.

In the days after the game, Kelce complained of the “wear and tear” that comes with playing a full football season.

“The fact that we keep going to these AFC Championships and these Super Bowls, that means I’m playing an extra three [more] games than everybody else in the entire league,’’ Kelce said on his “New Heights” podcast. “That’s a lot of wear and tear on your body and it’s a lot of time spent in the building, focusing on your craft, focusing on the task at hand, every challenge that you set up for yourself. That process can be grueling [and] it can weigh on you.”

Kelce and Mahomes have played eight seasons together in Kansas City, winning three Lombardi Trophies and reaching five total Super Bowls.

The pair have connected for a record 18 postseason touchdowns throughout their careers.
