The entire upper house crossbench all voted to support the Coalition’s motion today, with the final vote 25-15.

Opposition upper house leader Georgie Crozier said the inquiry would allow “Victorians to understand what went wrong” with the Games, which were abruptly cancelled last month, citing cost blowouts.

“This committee now needs to look into the decisions made by the government for scrapping the Games,” she said.

“It needs to be undertaken so we can get to the bottom of what went wrong.

“It’s in the interest of all Victorians – indeed, all Australians.”

The government had attempted to stop the inquiry from going ahead by moving an amendment to have it referred to the Victorian Auditor-General’s Office (VAGO) for investigation.

A committee will be set up within the week, with public hearings to follow.

The inquiry will provide an interim report by April 30, 2024.
