Australia’s Parliament House has been ‘locked down’ after a suspicious package was found in the building’s Marble Foyer.

Visitors were asked to gather in public access areas, away from the front of the building after alarms were activated on Friday afternoon.

Nine News politics reporter Reece D’Alessandro said he was told there is a ‘credible threat’ in the building’s Marble Foyer.

Those attending today’s early childhood summit were evacuated from the Great Hall.

An ACT police spokesman told Daily Mail Australia that people were given the green light to re-enter Parliament House at about 2pm.

‘About 12.45 this afternoon, ACT Policing received a call about a possible suspicious package at Parliament House,’ a police statement read.

‘A cordon was put in place for approximately one hour, with some local road closures, while a search of the area was undertaken.

‘This matter has now been resolved with nothing suspicious located.

‘The cordon has been lifted, the building and all roads are now reopened.’

Senator Lidia Thorpe took to Twitter to update her followers on the situation.

‘Blak Estimates interrupted due to Police Operation in Parliament,’ she tweeted.
