A paddleboarder enjoying the water off the coast of San Diego had an eerie encounter with the “unmistakable” shadow of a great white shark lurking just beneath him.
Bill Clements posted a video of the shark to his Instagram account @paddlegoat last week. A dark shadow can be seen swimming in the greenish water just below the surface as Clements paddles by.
“Oh, there he is. Oh!” Clements said in the video, laughing to himself.
Clements called the shark sighting a “thrilling and unexpected encounter” but not without some anxiety.
“I’ll admit it was a bit spooky to see the dark unmistakable shadow of a great white beneath the surface,” he wrote.
He said he had previously traveled to South Africa to try and see a great white shark in the wild but never got the chance due to bad weather.

“So ironic to see one right in my back yard!” he wrote.
Last month a woman paddleboarding from the Bahamas to Florida as part of a charity event was closely followed by a hammerhead shark in the open ocean, heart-pounding video shows.
Malea Tribble of Fort Lauderdale was competing in the 83-mile trek when the shark began stalking her and even tapped the bottom of her board.
The video shows the shark’s dorsal fin pop out of the water right behind her.
Tribble kept her cool as her husband guided her and her partner away from the shark.
“I faced a huge fear of mine, and came out stronger than I ever thought I would be, and in reality, it was not as scary as I anticipated,” she said.
