Young children have survived a frightening close call in Adelaide’s north-east as an out-of-control car left the road, drove through a park and smashed into a family’s backyard.
Footage obtained exclusively by 9News shows the chaos unfolding on RM Williams drive in Walkley Heights just before 11am today.
It’s understood the driver may have been unconscious behind the wheel as the blue SUV was seen mounting a roundabout before disappearing through a park and towards houses.
Father Hazen Kourbaj said he “still can’t believe it”.
“It took me two minutes,” he said.
“I was just standing there and looking and I couldn’t believe what I saw.”
It was the same spot where his children had been playing with their puppy only minutes earlier.
“I’m so thankful they weren’t there. They were there just a few minutes before,” he said.
There was also a close call for children playing in the nearby park.
They were seen running away as the car suddenly jumped the curb.
A bus stop was also taken out by the runaway vehicle.
“The driver was lucky to escape serious injury. I ran out to check on him,” Kourbaj said.
“He was trying to open the door, I was talking to him. But I couldn’t get him out of the car.”
Police said the 70-year-old man didn’t have drugs or alcohol in his system.
They’re investigating whether he may have suffered a medical episode behind the wheel.
