A man has died and another is in custody after a welfare check allegedly turned into a stand-off with police.

NSW Police were called to a unit on Goonoo Goonoo Road in Tamworth, in the state’s north, about 4.30pm on Saturday following reports of a concern for welfare.

Officers arrived to find a 47-year-old man with critical head injuries and a 55-year-old man allegedly armed with a knife.

The 47-year-old man was treated at the scene and rushed to Tamworth Base Hospital where he was declared dead.

Meanwhile, the 55-year-old man allegedly locked himself inside a bedroom before climbing onto the roof of the home.

Police secured the surrounding area and called officers from Tactical Operations Regional Support and police negotiators to the scene.

As officers were speaking with the 55-year-old, he fell from the roof.

‘He was treated by paramedics for stab wounds to his chest before being taken to Tamworth Base Hospital, where he remains under police guard in a serious but stable condition,’ NSW Police said in a statement.

It’s understood the two men were known to each other.

A crime scene was established at the home and detectives attached to Oxley Police District establishing Strike Force Elsner to investigate the incident.

The State Crime Command’s Homicide Squad will also assist in the investigation.

Anyone with information about the incident is urged to contact Tamworth Police or Crime Stoppers.
