A child has died and four others are fighting for their lives after a car allegedly ploughed into a group of cyclists during a race in the NSW Northern Tablelands.

Dozens of emergency service vehicles, including paramedics, police, fire crews and two rescue helicopters responded to the horror crash on Long Swamp Road, around 14km south-west of Armidale at 3.30pm on Saturday.

One cyclist has been declared dead, while three others have been rushed to hospital.

The driver of the car, a woman in her 40s, had to be cut free after it crashed into a tree. She is being treated at the scene and remains in a critical condition.

‘There are still multiple paramedics on the scene,’ a spokesperson for NSW Ambulance said.  

‘Two cyclists were transported by road to Armidale hospital, while a third cyclist has been taken to Armidale airport to be met by a Westpac rescue helicopter.’

‘The driver, a woman in her 40s, is in a critical condition.’ 

A spokesperson for NSW Police said they responded to reports that ‘a car and several cyclists had collided, before the car continued and hit a tree’.

‘One of the cyclists died at the scene. He is yet to be formally identified,’ the spokesperson added.

‘Three other cyclists have been injured and are being treated at the scene.

‘The driver of the vehicle was trapped and released shortly following the arrival of emergency services. She is also being treated at the scene.’

‘The conditions of all those injured are unknown.’

Long Swamp Road, near the intersection of Edwards Road, remains closed and is not expected to reopen until tomorrow (Sunday 15 December 2024).
