A cold front is sweeping the southeastern corner of the country, with Melbourne predicted to have its coldest May weekend in 23 years.

Some places are only expected to see maximum temperatures of 5 to 8 degrees, as Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and Sydney experience the cold snap.

If Melbourne stays at or below the forecasted temperature of 13 degrees on both Saturday and Sunday it will be the city’s coldest weekend since August 2021 and the coldest May weekend in 23 years, according to Weatherzone.

“A strong cold front will drag a polar air mass across south eastern Australia this weekend, causing temperature to plummet and delivering a mix of rain, hail, snow, blustery winds and thunderstorms,” Weatherzone said.

Showers are likely in parts of South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, New South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory.

”The air should be cold enough for snow to reach around 500m elevation in Tasmania, 700-800m in Victoria, 800-900m in southern NSW and the ACT, and around 900-1000m in central NSW,” Weatherzone said.

The maximum temperatures for the capitals are Sydney 22, Melbourne 13, Brisbane 26, Perth 19, Adelaide 15, Hobart 13, Canberra 16 and Darwin 33 degrees.

Tomorrow the maximum temperatures for the capitals are Sydney 18, Melbourne 13, Brisbane 26, Perth 24, Adelaide 16, Hobart 12, Canberra 9 and Darwin 34.
