Witnesses followed the driver to a nearby home on Flinders Street, where he allegedly attempted to get away in a second vehicle, but members of the public managed to hold him there until police arrived.

Detective Senior Sergeant Craig Mansfield said the members of the public had done “an unbelievable job”.

“They’ve somewhat taken some matters into their own hands, significantly assisted us in that investigation,” he said.

The front of the Nisan and the driver’s side door were crushed during the collision.

The Mercedes was allegedly stolen from a home in Landsborough during an armed robbery about 2am, before it was seen “driving recklessly” around Nambour, police have said.

Investigators are asking for any dashcam or CCTV footage of either the alleged robbery or crash to be sent to crime stoppers.

No charges have been laid.
