A major police operation was underway today after about 30 neo-Nazi National Socialist Network members gathered at Artarmon Reserve about 8.30am.
They were served with a Public Safety Order prohibiting them from entering further Sydney local government areas.
While the far-right extremists dispersed and no arrests were made, residents were shocked to see the disturbing scenes unfold in the North Shore.
“I’m really upset and I know all of our neighbours are really upset,” one said.
“How ridiculous,” another said.
“I think they’re quite laughable. I’m not sure the local community would buy into any of that,” a third said.
Yesterday, the same group anonymously booked out the North Turramurra Scout Hall for a “combined casual 30th birthday party and belated Australia day weekend get-together with friends”.
But residents instead reported hearing “sounds of people yelling and screaming” and seeing “young men without their shirts on running up the street”.
They were intercepted by police at North Sydney, where six people were arrested and dozens of infringements were issued. No charges were laid.
Victorian and New South Wales extremist members are believed to have carefully organised the latest string of racist demonstrations.
NSW Premier Chris Minns warned the they would soon be unmasked.
“In New South Wales, the police have the ability to unmask you, so in front of your family, your friends, your employers, your co-workers, you’ll be exposed as a massive racist and that’s the situation in New South Wales,” he said at a press conference today.
“This is obviously distressing for many people to see this fascist, ridiculous behaviour on New South Wales streets and obviously it’s pathetic.”
