A man allegedly captured an ibis bird and performed shocking, cruel acts against it near a Sydney train station.

An investigation is underway after police received a number of calls that a man had allegedly captured an ibis bird outside Eastwood Railway station, in the city’s north-western suburbs on Tuesday.

Police have been told the man allegedly tied a rope around the bird’s feet and neck and was trying to place it into a wheeled red trolley bag.

Witnesses intervened and managed to free the bird from the man who allegedly fled the scene before police arrived.

The bird appeared to have an injured beak and was bleeding but also flew from the scene before police and WIRES wildlife rescue officers were able to capture it.
