New York State trooper shot on Long Island during traffic stop

A New York State trooper was shot in the leg during a traffic stop on a Long Island parkway Wednesday night, sources and authorities said.

The shooting unfolded around 11:30 p.m. on the Southern State Parkway near exit 17, according state police and the sources.

The trooper had pulled over a black Dodge Charger and during the car stop they were shot by a suspect in the vehicle, according to sources.

The wounded trooper was taken to Nassau County University Medical Center in stable condition.

The driver of the Charger fled the scene and police were searching for the vehicle early Thursday, the sources said.
