New Year’s Eve celebrations have kicked-off around the country as some Aussies celebrate a restriction-free NYE for the first time since 2019.
Sydney’s 9pm family-friendly fireworks put on a colourful display for the hundreds of thousands lining the Sydney Harbour foreshore, in a celebration of Indigenous heritage.
It provided a preview of what’s to come at midnight, when some 7,000 fireworks will explode off the Sydney Harbour Bridge and another 2,000 are set to fire off the Sydney Opera House.
However, all vantage points are now at full capacity with authorities asking that only those with tickets to come into the City of Sydney.
Sydney wasn’t the only Australian city getting the party started early.

Melbourne and Hobart both had their early fireworks at 9.30pm, while Brisbane’s family fun started at the same time – 8.30pm local time.
Over in Adelaide, there was a hybrid fireworks and lights show at 9.30pm at Rymill Park/Murlawirrapurka before the main event at midnight.
Fireworks will take place shortly along the Swan River as Perth joins the New Year celebrations.
Due to the threat of monsoonal damaging wind and surf, Darwin Waterfront’s New Year’s Eve celebrations have been cancelled.
