Australians are warned to avoid travelling to Gaza amid the intense fighting between Hamas and Israel that has left hundreds dead.
The government’s Smart Traveller website has now also been updated to warn people against visiting any areas near the Gaza border.

“Rockets have been fired at Israel from Gaza. There have been separate terror attacks on civilians,” the warning reads.

“Authorities are also monitoring security on Israel’s northern border and have asked residents of some towns to evacuate, including in Rosh Hanikra, Adamit, Bezet and Hanita.”

People who are in Israel are urged to keep up to date with country’s National Emergency Portal.

“If you’re in Gaza, be aware of your surroundings, and review your personal security plans,” the wearning read.

Anybody in need of consular assistance in an emergency is urged to call +61 2 6261 3305, but should be warned the government may not be able to provide help in Gaza.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said today officials were working to determine the welfare and safety of Australians in Israe.

She said there were no current reports of Australians being injured or hospitalised, but urged Australians still in Israel to contact their families if they haven’t already done so.
