There’s obviously no excuse for speeding, but it seems the new Rozelle Interchange is attracting its fair share of those willing to take the risk.

The four speeding cameras in the tunnels have nabbed 15,834 drivers in just the first four months of this year.

A single stretch of the new motorway at Sydney’s Rozelle interchange has become a lucrative source of income for the state government. (Nine)

That’s a staggering $5,935,959 in revenue for the State Government.

“When people are driving in these new locations, we have to help make sure they’re doing the right thing; more needs to be done,” NRMA media head Peter Khoury said.

The speed camera in the southbound tunnel, the link between the Iron Cove Bridge and the M8 Motorway, is in a 60 kilometre an hour zone.

It’s also still in “warning mode”, which usually means that drivers are only fined if they’re caught doing more than 30km over the limit.

That 30 kilometre buffer has been lowered, with road safety officials concerned about the number of speeding drivers.

That led to 4791 drivers being penalised.

Officials say this approach has contributed to fewer drivers breaking the rules.
