Netflix’s “Sex/Life” ends after the show’s second season. The cancelation news comes just a few weeks after the show debuted its second season on the streamer, per The Hollywood Reporter. Season 2 only featured six episodes, after the first season featured eight in total.
‘Sex/Life’ Gets The Axe From Netflix
It appears star Sarah Shahi (“Person of Interest,” “Bullet to the Head,” “Old School”) has already bounced back ahead of the show’s cancelation. She signed on to star in a new legal television drama, “Judgement,” for ABC. As reported by Deadline, Shahi will star in the pilot and from former “Charmed” showrunner Joey Falco and 20th Television. It’s currently in contention for a season pickup at ABC. Shahi also starred opposite Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in the DC comic book superhero feature, “Black Adam,” released last October.
While the show was canceled with the second season, the show did provide an ending to Shahi’s character Billie reuniting with her ex, Brad (Adam Demos). The two were married on a beach. However, showrunner Stacy Rukeyser previously told THR that she didn’t see the final episode as the end of the series.
Rukeyser said, while speaking to THR, “The episode was never intended to be a series finale, that’s for sure.” The showrunner continued, “I know there are always more stories to tell with these characters in the ‘Sex/Life’ universe, and I hope we get the chance to tell those stories. We needed to get to a meaningful place with each character this season.” Whether Rukeyster gets a chance to tell those other stories she had in mind for the show will remain to be seen.
Shahi also noted during a recent podcast interview with “Not Skinny But Not Fat” that she did not feel the support for the second season that existed for the first one. She also stated that she “struggled with the material” in Season 2.

Netflix’s internal data had the series drawing 126.8 million hours of viewing time around the globe from March 2 to 26 before the show fell out of the Top 10 English-language shows on the streaming platform. Viewership dropped approximately 45% from a similar time frame for the first season, which drew about 232.79 million viewing actors when released in June 2021.
Season 2 also saw Demos’ character get a reduced role, which Shahi called a “bummer.” Shahi and Demos started dating in December 2020, which Shahi believes helped make the pairing popular while speaking to “Not Skinny But Not Fat.”
The series also starred Mike Vogel, Margaret Odette, Cleo Anthony, and Darius Homayoun. The series was based on BB Easton’s book “44 Chapters About 4 Men.” Rukeyser executive produced the series with J. Miles Dale and Jordan Hawley.
Some newer Netflix shows that recently did get Season 2 renewals to include “The Recruit,” “The Mole,” “The Lincoln Lawyer,” and “The Sandman.” Netflix renewed “The Recruit,” which stars Shahi’s “Black Adam” costar Noah Centineo, earlier this year.
While the show is canceled, Netflix subscribers can still check out the two seasons of “Sex/Life” on the streamer.
