Police are investigating how Nazi symbols were drawn on billboards erected by a Nationals politician in regional NSW.

Swastikas were discovered to have been sketched on outdoor advertising boards belonging to federal Nationals candidate for Calare Sam Farraway, in Orange, about 260km west of Sydney, on Tuesday.

Farraway said he hoped those responsible for the graffiti “cop the full force of the law”.

In a message on social media, he said it was “disappointing to find it in our backyard in the Central West, a region that is home to many people, races and cultures.”

Farraway also said far-right extremism has no place in Australia.

Police said they were investigating the “offensive” vandalism.

“The New South Wales Police Force takes hate crimes seriously.”

The incident comes amid a spate of antisemitic attacks in Sydney and Melbourne over past months that have been condemned by state and national leaders.

On Tuesday, a firebomb attack on a childcare centre in south-east Sydney left the building gutted.

NSW Police set up Strike Force pearl last month to investigate hate crimes with an antisemitic focus across Sydney’s eastern suburbs.

To date, it has charged nine people over alleged attacks.

Anyone with information should contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
