A man has been caught on camera igniting an object on an inner-city Brisbane causing an explosion that woke residents several suburbs away.

CCTV footage shows the mystery man pulling up on Clyde Street in Herston, dropping off the object, and driving away before sparks filled the air just before 3am.

There was minimal damage to the street and no injuries were reported.

The subsequent loud bang jolted residents awake across several suburbs.

Residents took to social media to speculate on the source of the sound.

One person said they “honestly thought it was a bomb”.

Queensland Police are investigating the incident and said there is no cause for further alarm.

“No injuries or damage have been reported and investigators are reviewing CCTV to establish the circumstances of the incident,” police said.

Investigators are searching the area for additional vision and further information.
