A Western Australian fisherman has reeled in a monster catch while on an annual boys’ trip.

Adrian Merendino was out on the boat with several friends between the Mesa and Tulki campgrounds in the Cape Range National Park near Exmouth in August when he hooked the 11kg, 95cm Chinaman cod.

“It took me about 20 minutes to get it in the boat,” Merendino told 9news.com.au today.

When Merendino finally caught the fish, there was a celebration on the boat.

“There were high fives then I had to sit down and have a rest. My arms were pumping,” he said.

Merendino, who has visited the national park every year for 20 years, said the Chinaman cod is an uncommon fish to find in the area.

“We normally get a lot of spangled emperor,” he said.

Merendino said fellow fishers needed to have “lots of patience” if they want to catch a monster fish.
