Homicide squad detectives are investigating after a man died following a house fire in Melbourne.

Police said emergency services were called to the fire at a home on Chapel Street, St Kilda about 8.40pm yesterday.

Firefighters found the critically injured man at the home and treated him but he couldn’t be saved.

He is yet to be formally identified.

Police are treating the death and the fire as suspicious.

A crime scene has been set up and an arson chemist will assess the scene.
