Four people were injured in a shooting at a class reunion picnic outside the Tyner Community Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee

Four people were injured in a shooting at a class reunion outside the Tyner Community Center in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Reports of gunfire at Ty Hi Drive were received by the Chattanooga Police Department just after 3pm on Saturday, Local3News first reported.

All four victims have been transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, a police spokesperson said.

The shooter was targeting an alumni picnic for graduates of Tyner High School, said Napierra Alexander, a public relations manager for the city of Chattanooga.

The school is a stone’s throw away from the community center. The picnic was held on a soccer field near the school, which is now full of police cars and abandoned canopies.

The picnic was part of the annual alumni weekend for Tyner High School, Alexander said.

Jeoff Herman, who was at the picnic, described a scene of total chaos.

‘Everybody was just having a good time,’ he told Local3. ‘Then all the sudden shots just started going everywhere. Little kids and babies and everything were on the ground. It was bad, real bad.’

According to other witnesses, reunion-goers either fled the scene or got to the ground to take cover.

Police are now asking people to avoid the area.

Witnesses on the scene said there was a class reunion happening at the center and that there was chaos when the first shots were heard.

Police said there is currently no threat to the public, though no suspect has been publicly identified.

The reunion weekend was for the class of 1982 all the way through the class of 2024, according to a Facebook post from the Tyner Alumni Association.

The Chattanooga Police Department told Daily Mail that ‘investigators are working to determine circumstances’ of the shooting and that it ‘will provide updates as more information is confirmed.’
