A woman has died and five other people – including two young children – have been injured in a horrific crash which blocked a major highway in central west NSW.

Emergency services were called to the scene at Aarons Pass, south of Mudgee, about 2pm on Friday after a southbound ute and a northbound SUV collided in the northbound lane.

Four people were in the SUV and two were in the ute.

A woman, 32, who was a front-seat passenger in the SUV was critically injured and was taken to Mudgee Hospital for treatment.

She died a short time later, NSW Police confirmed in a statement.

The SUV’s 34-year-old male driver and the front-seat passenger in the ute, a 68-year-old man, were flown to Westmead Hospital with serious injuries.

Two girls, aged two and six, who were back seat passengers in the SUV were taken to The Children’s Hospital at Westmead.

A NSW Police spokesman said both were in a stable condition.

A crime scene was established and investigations are now underway into the circumstances leading up to the crash.
