Liam Newman, 25, was skydiving near a rural property in Tarawera, about 260km west of Toowoomba, on Tuesday, when emergency services were called.
Friends, family and colleagues have taken to social media to mourn the death of the young skydiver.
Newman’s workplace, iFLY Indoor Skydiving in Brisbane, shared a post confirming his death.
“We are incredibly saddened to hear that one of our staff members, Liam Newman has had a fatal accident at a skydiving event in Western Queensland today,” the company said in a statement on Facebook.
“He was a much-loved staff member of our team, and our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
“Out of respect for Liam, and our team, we are closing our Brisbane tunnel for the coming days.”
An online fundraiser was also created by Newman’s best friend Cody Mason.
Mason said Newman was a keen skydiver who “dared to push the limits”.
“Our brother and our best friend Liam Newman tragically passed away in a skydiving accident. Liam was a man who dared to push the limits and had his heart set on achieving the world,” he said.
“Liam has been my best friend for 20 years, he is my brother and it breaks my heart to be in this position.”
Queensland Police confirmed the Forensic Crash Unit is investigating a fatal skydiving accident following a mishap with a parachute.
Newman was treated for life-threatening injuries and died at the scene.
The Australian Parachute Federation (APF) confirmed to 9News it has also launched an investigation into Newman’s death.
