Moderna CEO Stephane Bancel made headlines at the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) Davos 2023 conference in January when he admitted to a CNBC host on air that his pharmaceutical company had begun working on a COVID-19 vaccine before the virus even had a name. Bancel also said that he wanted an mRNA vaccine factory on every continent and that his company was making a deal with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) to bring Modern COVID-19 vaccines to China. But it appears those weren’t Bancel’s only shocking admissions at Davos 2023. Bancel also openly boasted he saw the pandemic as a huge money maker for Moderna right from the start and said he knew there would be a pandemic in 2019, contrary to previous claims.
He also made a cryptic remark about Moderna producing “a hundred thousand doses” of vaccines in 2019, even though Moderna had never produced a licensed product before the COVID vaccine.
Bancel was a featured speaker on the January 18 WEF panel “State of the Pandemic.” During that panel, moderator and Euronews senior business editor Sasha Vakulina asked Bancel, “Let’s talk about vaccine development, ’cause we’ve heard how it happened obviously with COVID-19 starting from 2022 and how extraordinary the process was also in terms of the speed. How is the development, adoption, and scaling of vaccines going on when it comes for different variants and sub-variants?” She called this one of the “big concerns” the WEF Davos attendees had.
The “great news” is that Moderna and other vaccine makers now have “manufacturing capacity,” Bancel began. “When the [COVID] pandemic happened, Moderna had made a hundred thousand doses in 2019 for the whole year. And I remember walking after those into the office of my other manufacturing and I say, ‘How we make [sic] a billion dollars next year?’ And they look at me a bit funny and say, ‘What?’ And I say, ‘Yeah, we need to make a billion dollars next year, there’s going to be a pandemic.’”
The CEO of Moderna knew there was going to be a pandemic. Should we ask him when the next one will be?

Bancel would likely justify his apparent excitement about the COVID pandemic making Moderna so much money by claiming that he wanted to make the money with “life-saving” vaccines. But that’s sure a strange way of saying it. After all, he didn’t say, “We need to increase vaccine manufacture.” He said, “We need to make a billion dollars next year.” No wonder his employees gave him strange looks.
Furthermore, we now have plenty of evidence that the COVID vaccines, including Moderna’s, are not effective against COVID-19 and have serious and dangerous side effects. There are a lot of suspicious circumstances here. Boston Magazine claimed in 2020 that Bancel wrote NIH Deputy Director Barney Graham as soon as he saw the news about “viral pneumonia” in China in January 2020 (COVID-19 first surfaced in December 2019, according to the CDC, but was officially identified as a new virus in January), and Graham reportedly wrote Bancel, “If it’s a coronavirus, we know what to do and have proven mRNA is effective.” The really weird part? Moderna had never produced a licensed vaccine—or a licensed product at all—before its COVID vaccine, according to that same Boston Magazine article. To what, then, was Bancel referring when he said Moderna made a “hundred thousand doses” of something in 2019?
But then again, the Boston Magazine article would seem to contradict Bancel’s stated timeline anyway. According to the magazine, Bancel only found out about the new virus—which might be a coronavirus—in January 2020. And yet by his own account at Davos, Bancel knew there was going to be a (lucrative) pandemic in 2019, and Moderna had already begun to make a vaccine by January 2020. Did Moderna start the day after Bancel found out about COVID, supposedly from a headline online? Boston Magazine did say that Moderna was already about to announce it would be making an mRNA vaccine when Bancel found out about the new coronavirus, and that Moderna began planning to make a COVID vaccine almost right away. But then how does that account for Bancel knowing there would be a pandemic at the end of 2019, as he seemed to say at Davos?
And again, what was the product for which Moderna made 100,000 doses? Considering Moderna had no other licensed product before the COVID vaccine, though the company website says it developed unlicensed vaccines before then, that’s a mystery. Bancel and Moderna owe the world some clear answers.
