MLB’s instant replay needs more common sense in one major facet

Instant replay has improved the game of baseball drastically — even if it was too late to preserve Armando Galarraga’s perfect game — and there is even still some room to use more of it.

But in one particular instance, it needs to be scaled back.

You’ve seen the play plenty of times before: a runner on first takes off for a steal and stretches out his arm or foot into second base just as the infielder slaps the tag on him.

He is called safe on the field, but the other team challenges the call.
