The Bureau of Meteorology has been unable to confirm the category of the winds but residents reported large amounts of damage from the sudden strong gusts in Trinity Park near Palm Cove north of Cairns about midday on Thursday.

The worst of the damage was around the Bluewater Marina where parts from boats were being thrown in the air by the winds.

Residents reported homes being damaged extensively by the winds and debris.

Jasper had earlier left 40,000 homes without power across the region.

The storm, now a tropical low, crossed the coast last night as a category 2 system near Wujal Wujal, about 115 kilometres north of Cairns.
