The rollercoaster weather in the opening week of spring is continuing across Australia, with a mixed bag of conditions forecast across the country today.

Damaging winds and summer-like temperatures are expected in parts of the east, while the mercury will plummet in the south-western corner of Western Australia, with even the chance of snow.

Two cold fronts moving across the south-east of the country are driving a fresh burst of powerful winds expected to impact Victoria and New South Wales in the coming hours.

In NSW the winds will be accompanied by soaring temperatures and sunny conditions, with the mercury forecast to reach a maximum of 29 degrees in Sydney, Wollongong, Newcastle and other coastal cities and towns.

The fine weather for millions of people will continue tomorrow and into the weekend.

In contrast to the east coast heat, temperatures will plunge in the south-western corner of Western Australia told as a wintry cold front sweeps through.

The maximum temperatures will struggle to reach 13 degrees in Albany and hail is forecast for some parts. There could also be snow flurries in Isolated parts of the Stirling Ranges, the bureau said.
