Miley Cyrus refuses to get rid of the dress she wore on ‘intimate’ first date with ex Liam Hemsworth — here’s why

Miley Cyrus knows it would be a climb to get rid of this item.

Five years after finalizing her divorce from ex-husband Liam Hemsworth, the singer is still holding onto something sentimental from their relationship.

“I literally have a dress that I had on when I met my ex-husband, and then I have my dress that I wore on our first date,” Cyrus told Vogue in an interview published Wednesday.

“Along with letters and things that I really, I want to savor these kind of beautiful moments of my life, but because these intimate moments have also been public moments, it’s a little bit tough to decide what piece I want to share and what I would ever allow to be seen.”

The singer found the dress, letters and other items while “deep in the inventory and organization” of her life.

Cyrus is also “creating a legacy rack, which is a couple of looks from every era that I would want to be remembered.”

“Everything I do in my life is a little bit intense, but it has to be holistic,” she explained. “And that’s why my eras, they’re not a costume, they’re actually like a metamorphosis or a true evolution for me personally.”

Cyrus and Hemsworth, 35, first met in 2009 on the set of “The Last Song” and began dating shortly after.

The pair had an on-again, off-again relationship before getting engaged in 2012.

They ultimately postponed their wedding in April 2013, before calling off their engagement all together in September of that year.

The exes reconciled in 2016 and tied the knot in December 2018.

A year later, Cyrus and Hemsworth split with the “Lonely Planet” actor ultimately filing for divorce.

“Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy,” Cyrus’ rep told People at the time.

The singer later said on the “Joe Rogan Experience” podcast that the public divorce “f—king sucked.”

“What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore,” Cyrus continued. “That’s okay. I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing and just all those stories.”

The “Hannah Montana” alum has since moved on with drummer Maxx Morando, 26, whom she began dating in 2021.

Hemsworth, for his part, recently got engaged to model Gabriella Brooks.

Earlier this month, the engaged couple shared pictures from the special moment on Instagram, showcasing Brooks’ diamond.

She simply captioned the post with a white heart emoji.

In 2023, Cyrus detailed the moment she knew her marriage with Hemsworth was over.

In a clip of her “Used to Be Young” series on TikTok at the time, the pop star said she knew the romance was over while headlining at the 2019 Glastonbury Festival in England.

“Glastonbury was in June, which was when the decision happened that me and Liam’s commitment to being married just really came from, of course, a place of love first — because we’d been together for 10 years — but also from a place of trauma,” Cyrus recounted.

The Disney Channel alum had lost their beloved home during the November 2018 Woolsey fire in Malibu, Calif.

Cyrus said they suffered a lot of loss and were “just trying to rebuild as quickly as [they] could.”

“The day of the show was the day I had decided that it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship,” the “Flowers” artist continued.

Cyrus felt like she had to bury those feelings and put on a brave face.

“That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first,” she said. “And I guess now that’s why it’s so important to me for me to not be the case [anymore]. The human comes first.”
