Mets’ Edwin Díaz not worried about wild spring debut: ‘Was rushing myself’

PORT ST. LUCIE — Edwin Díaz was wild in his spring debut.

The Mets closer recorded one out in 19 pitches and was charged with two runs on two hits and a walk in a third of an inning during a 5-1 loss to the Astros at Clover Park.

Five of the first six pitches he threw were balls.

Díaz is not concerned.

“I think I was a little excited today,” Díaz said. “That’s how I feel. I was rushing myself to home plate.”

“He was off today,” added Carlos Mendoza, who was just happy Díaz physically felt fine.

Sean Reid-Foley cleared outright waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Syracuse.

He is off the 40-man roster.

The righty reliever can accept the minor league assignment or decline and become a free agent.

Brandon Nimmo was sent for an MRI exam on his sore right knee, and “there was nothing for us to worry about,” Mendoza said.

Nimmo remained out of the spring lineup, but could be in a game in a day or two.

“We’re not concerned,” Mendoza said. “He’s close.”

Starling Marte is “still a few days away” from a spring debut, Mendoza said.

The outfielder/DH is dealing with the same knee bone bruise that plagued him last year.

“He told me early in camp, ‘Basically, I’ve played through pain my entire career. I’m used to it. I’ll keep doing it,’ ” David Stearns said. “He’s not particularly concerned about this. He performed at a really high level in September and October for us despite battling a much more severe version of this. We’ve now had an offseason to treat and recover, so I expect he’s going to be able to battle through this.”

Dedniel Nuñez, whom the Mets are slow-playing after he strained his flexor tendon last year, is expected to throw another bullpen session before possibly beginning live batting practices “over the next week or so,” Stearns said.
