Australia had a fond love of movies since they arrived on the nation’s shores in 1896.

By 1927 there were 1250 cinemas. Now, just a handful of the picturesque buildings remain.

It was a big day at the new State Theatre in Sydney in 1929 when a Wurlitzer organ was delivered to much fanfare.

Dubbed the voice of silent movies, the organ remains today.

The Theatre opened on June 7, 1929.

The first film shown was The Patriot.

By 1927 there were 1250 cinemas in Australia with over 110 million admissions.
