Melbourne and surrounding regions has been rocked late at night by a 4.3-magnitude earthquake.
Hundreds of people in the city and in surrounding areas reported feeling or being woken by a sudden tremor just before 1am Friday.
Authorities confirmed the quake struck near Leongatha in Victoria’s Gippsland region at 12.49am, 135km south-east of Melbourne.
Initial estimates measured the quake as a magnitude 4.3, with a depth of 7km.
The earthquake was felt from as far north as Sunbury in Melbourne to Wilson’s Promontory National Park in the south, according to Geoscience Australia.
There are no reports of any injuries or damage at this early stage, according to the Victoria SES.
Aussies took to social media to describe being woken by the impact, including seismologist Adam Pascale.

‘It woke me in the northern suburbs of Melbourne so I’m sure a lot of people across the city have felt this one,’ Mr Pascale told TikTok viewers in an early morning video.
‘There could be aftershocks continuing so we’ll see.’
More than 2,500 Victorians lodged reports within two hours of the earthquake.
The Bureau of Meteorology reported there was no tsunami threat.
On the other side of the world, Melbourne in the US state of Florida was also rocked by a 4.0 magnitude earthquake around the same time.
The tremor comes after a 3.3-magnitude earthquake struck regional Victoria on Tuesday.
The earlier earthquake was recorded by Geoscience Australia about 45km south of Traralgon in the Latrobe Valley, regional Victoria, at 12.15pm on Tuesday.
It struck at a ‘very shallow depth’ about 1km under the surface and could have been felt about 35km away from the epicentre.
Residents in towns such as Foster, Mirboo North, Leongatha, Meeniyan and Morwell reported experiencing the earthquake, which would have felt like a ‘light vibration’.
It is believed to have been too weak to be felt by residents in larger towns further away from the epicentre such as Traralgon and Warragul.
