Former View host Meghan McCain weighed in on Jon Stewart’s surprise return to The Daily Show during a recent episode of her podcast, where she complained about how “woke” the comedian has become.
McCain was joined by Fox News contributor Joe Concha on a recent episode of Meghan McCain Has Entered the Chat when she began taking shots at the comedian’s style of political commentary. She admitted that she used to be a fan of The Daily Show during her “formative years” as a teenager until Stewart “became more critical of conservative voices in politics.”
She said that her opinion of Stewart changed when she watched his Apple TV+ show The Problem With Jon Stewart.
“I was horrified at the sort of creature he has morphed into. I found him to be the most woke, I didn’t recognize the Jon that I grew up loving,” McCain claimed.
She added that she hopes to see “the original OG Jon Stewart” when he returns to The Daily Show, but said, “I’m not going to hold my breath.”
Her criticism didn’t stop there. “At a certain point, when does making money and having people watch your s**t matter?” she asked. “Because if it’s just going to be MSNBC, but by a comedian, what’s the point of it? Or is this going to slag on forever like zombies into the darkness?”
Stewart will be returning to The Daily Show on Feb. 12 in light of the upcoming 2024 election. This will be the first time he’s returned to the show since he left in 2015 and passed the baton to Trevor Noah.
The show has been cycling through guest hosts since Noah stepped away in 2022. Stewart hosting every Monday night will provide some much-needed stability to the show moving forward.
The comedian will also serve as an executive producer, a role which could continue into 2025, some reports say.
Stewart announced the surprising news in a post on X, where he wrote, “Friends. After much reflection I have decided to enter the transfer portal for my last year of eligibility. Excited for the future!”
Stewart will surely be making a big comeback to linear television, considering 2024 is already shaping up to be a memorable election year with the return of Donald Trump.
The Daily Show airs Mondays through Thursdays at 11 p.m. ET on Comedy Central.
