A health worker is fighting for life and a young person is in custody after an incident at a Tasmanian hospital.

The medical professional suffered a serious injury in what police described as a “wounding incident” involving a youth at the North West Regional Hospital in Cooee on Sunday.

The worker was airlifted from the hospital near Burnie, in the state’s north-west, to the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition, police said.

They took the youth into custody shortly after being called to the Cooee medical centre about 4.30pm and remained at the scene into the evening.
