Mason Wood was stretchered off during St Kilda’s match against Collingwood in concerning scenes for footy fans.

The Saints star was on the end of a big hit with teammate Zaine Cordy in the opening quarter of Thursday night’s game, briefly compulsing on the turf while receiving medical attention.

After a lengthy delay, Wood was taken from the field of play and the match continued.

He was taken to hospital for precautionary stands and replaced by Zak Jones with just under 10 minutes remaining of the first quarter.

St Kilda said on social media: ‘Mason Wood has left the field after an incident early in the first term. We’ll provide a further update when we can, and will provide Mason with the best care possible.

‘Fingers crossed for our much-loved wingman.’

It is the second time Wood has suffered a serious concussion injury, having been knocked out in a marking contest as a North Melbourne player in 2016.

Footy fans flocked to X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – to send their best wishes to the utility man on his road to recovery.

One fan said: ‘Thoughts are with Mason Wood. That was nasty and you never want to see that happen to anyone…’

‘That was horrible,’ another fan added. ‘Hope Mason Wood is ok’.

A third fan said: ‘Too much courage sometimes. Hope Mason Wood is okay on that stretcher. Didn’t look good’.
