The AFL has been forced into an apology after Marvel Stadium staff were given counselling having been caught up in a terrorism drill.

In an embarrassing sequence of events for the competition, frightened workers were caught off guard when they heard machine-gun fire ahead of St Kilda vs Brisbane at the Melbourne stadium.

The AFL has admitted there was a major communication breakdown after they failed to warn stadium staff about the terrorist training exercise, which took place last Friday.

Workers are now being counselled, such was the trauma of the event.

According to 7NEWS, staff had ‘no idea’ what was going on and were ‘terrified’ upon seeing heavily armed police enter the stadium.

Similar drills have been conducted by the police at the MCG in the past.

‘The AFL has apologised and offered counselling to the match-day workers involved,’ 7NEWS reporter Tom Browne said.

AFL executive Travis Auld said: ‘We had a number of people in the stadium who were working on that day and witnessed the training drill.

‘We’ve since spoken to them, we’ve since offered our support and apologised for that.’

The AFL took control of Marvel Stadium in 2016 in a deal worth around $200million.
