Mark Consuelos Defends His Exaggerated Reactions To Getting Sick On ‘Live’: “See, I’m An Actor. I’m Sensitive By Nature”

Mark Consuelos believes there’s a method (acting) to his madness when it comes to his reaction to getting sick. On this morning’s Live with Kelly and Mark, he and Kelly Ripa discussed “why cold symptoms are worst at night.”

“I always feel like when I have a fever, around 5 or 6 o clock when the sun sets, that’s when it flares up from a 99.2 to a 99.7,” he shared. “And I feel like I’m about to die.”

While Ripa pointed out that “99 is not considered a fever,” Consuelos continued to read the factors supporting the phenomenon, including circadian rhythm.

“Your body’s internal clock,” he explained. “When the sun sets, it tells your brain to wind down for bed. At the same time, it spurs certain immune cells to become more active — that’s what’s happening to me.”

Ripa quipped, “Your immune cells?” adding that she “would question” if he had any due to the “way [he] react[s] to a common cold.”

However, Consuelos was quick to defend himself.

“See, I’m an actor,” he said. “I’m sensitive by nature. I feel everything. So when I feel the slightest bit of something off, I feel it.”

He noted that he has to “access those things for [his] job” sometimes, telling Ripa, “When one of my character has to have a cold, I’ve gotta be able to talk like I have a cold,” employing a nasal voice to prove his point.

This prompted Ripa to recall when one of her kids had a “terrible sore throat.”

“And then as kids do, then the other kid had a terrible sore throat,” she continued. “And naturally, Mark will not be ignored … so Mark had a sore throat, and everybody had a sore throat.”

She then took them all to the pediatrician — “Mark, too” — to get a swab to test for strep throat, as “Mark declared that he and the kids” had it. She shared how Mark and their two sons got swabbed, but her daughter Lola was afraid to.

“And the pediatrician said, ‘Here, I’ll show you. I’ll do it to Mom first. I’ll show you how easy it is,’” Ripa remembered.

However, when she opened her mouth, the doctor asked her, ‘”Are you OK?’”

“And I said, ‘Yes. Why? Yeah I’m fine,’” she recalled. “And he said, ‘You have spots on your throat.’”

She then learned that despite not feeling ill, she was the only one out of the five of them to have strep.

“Because some of us don’t have time to entertain our symptoms,” Ripa argued.

Consuelos deemed her “the iron lady,” teasing, “You and Margaret Thatcher,” as Ripa joked, “I’m frequently compared to Margaret Thatcher. The Margaret Thatcher of daytime.”
