A man has died after allegedly being assaulted at one of Australia’s most iconic beaches and being placed into an induced coma.

Emergency services were called to The Corso, one of the main streets in Manly on Sydney’s northern beaches, about 3am on January 27 where they found a man with a ‘serious head injury’.

Police believe the 37-year-old had fallen backwards and hit his head during an alleged altercation with a 24-year-old man from Fairlight Jesse Allan.

He was rushed to Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition and placed into an induced coma where he remained for the next 10 days before dying on Tuesday night.

Police arrested Allan at his home on January 28 and and charged him with one count of wound with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

He faced Manly Local Court to apply for bail on January 28.

Allan’s barrister told the court that his client had used an ‘open handed push’ on the man in self defence during the altercation, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The court heard the accused had tried to help the man but fled the scene after being abused by onlookers.

The Magistrate granted Allan’s bail but noted a ‘very clear and serious injury to the victim’.

His bail conditions confine him to continue living with his parents and have him surrender both his Australian and UK passports.

Allan is expected to appear in Downing Centre Local Court on March 26.
